When designing our bathroom we might have different things to consider; if it’s small we want to make it look and feel bigger, if it’s large we want to make it more intimate and cosy.

Start with the right floor tile and wall tile and everything else will fall into place because the size and colour of floor and wall tiling makes a dramatic difference to the overall look. Whatever the size of your bathroom make it work with these few simple considerations.

  • Using large format tiles will help a small space feel larger, even more so if the grout colour matches.
  • Avoid tiling horizontally for border tiles in small areas, as they’ll make the space feel more enclosed. In a small bathroom you want to be blurring the edges of the room so that it feels larger and more spacious so use the same tiles on the walls as on the floor for a seamless look.
  • Use wall mounted furniture and sanitary ware as much of possible. The more of the floor you can see the more spacious the feel.
  • Make good use of mirrors to make the room feel lighter and more spacious.
  • For a really small space, consider a wet room with floor to wall tiles throughout. Wet rooms are very functional, easy to clean, and save on precious space.

Large bathroom tiling ideas

  • If you want to avoid a stark cold look in a large room, opt for tiling with warmer shaded wall tiles rather than light and white shades, our Brick Olive or Jade work beautifully. Or for a more dramatic ‘boutique hotel’ look go for dark shades of grey like our Apennine or Estilo ranges.
  • Dark floor tiles will add intimacy, depth and drama to a large space, again the San Gimignano range works well.
  • Break up a large space by having different areas for different functions and use the centre floor space for an impactful bathtub as a dramatic focal point.
  • Use furniture in the bathroom to house bath towels and toiletries, which will make the room feel more comfortable.

Whatever the size of your bathroom take time to ensure lighting is suitable. This is especially true if you have no natural light coming in. Also consider how you are planning to use your bathroom. If you intend to take long luxurious soaks at the end of the day, and if you have a beautiful new bathroom you might be more inclined to do, then mood lighting will be important. A dimmer switch will allow for both task and mood lighting and will allow you to see your beautiful wall tiles to full effect.
