Interview With Sustainable Kitchens

1. What is the most interesting project you've been involved in?

We have built kitchens in some lovely spaces, and it is the location of the project that really drives my interest. I especially enjoy working in old historic buildings and one particular one stands out partly due to the character of the building; an ancient stone cottage, and partly to the quirky taste of the owner which really gave us an opportunity to get creative with the design.

This alcove dresser, which the owner dubbed her “bonkers cabinet”, was designed around her love for crafts providing lots of little spaces for all the paraphernalia associated with arts and crafts.

Other unique elements to the design include; filling the chimney breast with a set of Oak fabric drawers, an extra small utilitarian centre island, a mild steel splashback cut into the outline of France and the range cooker which was painted Ferrari Yellow at the Ferrari factory in Italy.

2. What is your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel?

I’m a Farrow & Ball junkie and for me it is Down Pipe, I know it is just another grey and greys are everywhere at the moment. But you should see how, as the light moves around the windows in our showroom, the Down Pipe cabinets slowly change through all the blues and purples; it is grey but not as you know it!

3. What are you favourite materials to work with?

Wood of course! Particularly Oak which is the wonder material that we use to build our cabinets. It machines well, it looks stunning, it is harder than nails and when you paint over the top of it (and I would recommend Down Pipe) then you can still clearly see that it is Oak underneath.

4. Are there any new technologies you're excited about?

I am always interested in eco technology and a particular area of research I am watching at present is cement-free concrete. A concoction of natural polymers that substitutes the cement and thus reducing the carbon footprint of concrete through greener production techniques.

5. Do you have a favourite tile?

I have always liked natural stone tiles but at the moment I really like the white metro tiles that you commonly see in lavatories and underground stations, they compliment the industrial look of our kitchens really nicely.
